Project Description: Rejsesten (The Traveling Stones)

Rejsesten is a conceptual, participatory art project that weaves together geology, human history, and traditional craftsmanship. The project explores the parallel journeys of natural objects and handmade textiles, culminating in a global, collaborative movement.

The Concept

Every stone tells a geological story of movement, shaped by glaciers, rivers, or tides. Similarly, vintage lacework carries the silent history of the

artisan who spent hours weaving it. By encasing a found stone in an intricate piece of textile, two completely different journeys intersect to create a single, modern artifact: a Rejsesten.

The Artistic Process

The Discovery: A stone is collected from a specific location—a beach, a mountain peak, a garden, or a riverbed. Its origin is unknown, but its physical presence is a testament to thousands of years of travel.

The Craftsmanship: The stone is wrapped in a piece of handmade textile. These materials—including lace, embroidery, and crocheted doilies—are sourced from thrift stores and flea markets both in Denmark and abroad. They represent hours of past human creativity, inspiration, and patience.

The Fusion: The natural journey of the stone meets the cultural journey of the textile. Two objects, created in separate parts of the world and at different times, are joined together.

The Release: The completed Rejsesten is carried back out into the world. It is placed in a new location that inspires, brings joy, or holds personal meaning—whether that is 100 meters or several thousand kilometers away from home.

Digital Documentation & Community

Every Rejsesten is documented at its release location. By sharing the place and images, the project invites strangers to interact with the art.

A finder can choose to leave the stone or bring it home. Move it 100 meters, or take it across the globe, continuing a chain of shared human connection.
